The
Henry N. Barkhausen Award
For Original Research in Great Lakes Maritime History
All
entries must be postmarked no later than May 15
Guidelines
for Entrants
The Henry
N. Barkhausen Award is sponsored by the Association for Great Lakes
Maritime History (AGLMH) to recognize and encourage new research
in the field of Great Lakes maritime history.
Submissions
will be accepted from any person(s) involved in Great Lakes Maritime
History regardless of formal training.
Requirements
for Entrants
- Authors
must be able to attest that submissions have not been previously
published.
- The
paper must include original research using primary source materials
(manuscripts, photos, government documents, contemporaneous news
reports) or archeological findings. Writers are encouraged to
utilize the archives of AGLMH member institutions. (Potential
entrants may contact the Research and Publication Committee for
a list of member institutions.)
- All
sources must be properly documented. Either endnotes or footnotes
are acceptable. A bibliography is also required.
- Manuscripts
must be accompanied by a cover letter introducing the author,
but must themselves contain no hints of authorship. The
author's identity will not be revealed to the jurors.
- The
cover letter should include a one-paragraph abstract of the paper.
- A
self-addressed, stamped envelope should accompany manuscripts
if the authors wish to receive them back.
- Book-length
manuscripts will not be accepted. However, excerpts or abridgements
of larger works may be submitted as long as the total length is
75 pages or less, including notes and bibliography.
- Entries
may be submitted on 3.5 inch disc in either Microsoft Word or
WordPerfect.
- Author(s)
may submit copies of illustrative material. Originals will
not be accepted and the AGLMH will not assume responsibility for
loss of or damage to manuscripts or illustrations.
- Entries must be postmarked by May 15.
Judging
Each
entry which meets the above guidelines will be judged by a panel
of readers who will not know the authorship of the manuscript. Judges
will rate each entry on the following:
- Form
-- is the entry clearly written and are sources documented?
Readability
-- does the entry present the information in an understandable
manner?
- Documentation
-- does the author question his/her sources; and does he/she make
critical use of the work of others?
- Originality
-- does the entry add to the field's knowledge or understanding?
- Impact
-- how significant is the entry's contribution to our knowledge
or understanding of Great Lakes maritime history?
