AGLMH Mission

The Association for Great Lakes Maritime History is an international organization of museums, historical societies, libraries, archives, and individuals interested in preserving Great Lakes maritime history. The AGLMH holds an annual meeting, publishes a newsletter, and encourages research and the dissemination and exchange of information among members.

The Association is...

  • The only existing network for the exchange of ideas and information on collections, research, publications and developments between institutions and individuals focusing on the maritime history of the Great Lakes.
  • Founded as a non-profit organization by a number of prominent Great Lakes museums, document centers and concerned individuals from Canada and the United States, its first meeting was held in 1984. Meetings are now held annually in a member community.
  • The Association publishes a bimonthly newsletter. To receive a complimentary copy, send a request to the Association.

The Association Works to...

  • Strengthen communication and cooperation among member institutions and individuals by providing a forum and network through meetings and a newsletter for the exchange of ideas and information.
  • Promote appropriate collection and preservation of artifacts and documents with professional standards for these tasks.
  • Encourage research and dissemination of information concerning the Great Lakes and their maritime history including publication of papers and books developed from primary sources.
  • Speak as a unified group in cooperation with local, state, provincial, regional and national organizations and governments to promote the preservation of Great Lakes maritime history.
  • Network with community sports diver groups to develop interests in non-destructive underwater investigations.

AGLMH Projects and Activities include...

  • Set guidelines for the protection and use of underwater cultural resources
  • Review and endorse appropriate publications
  • Guide uniform cataloguing of archivall materials and artifacts
  • Develop a collective database on Lakes vessels and histories
  • Assist with identification, preservation and dissemination of research sources
  • Further professional archaeological researach through collaboration on such projects.
