How do the great lakes remain fresh water if they are connect to salt water systems?

The 5 great lakes form the world largest supply of freshwater. However, the great lakes are connected to 2 large bodies of salt water through a system of tributaries and rivers (including the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Mississippi River). Please help explain how the great lakes remain freshwater despite being directly connected to large water supplies.
