A major attraction at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum is the "Gothic Room"  from the Great Lakes passenger steamer City of Detroit III (left), which was the largest sidewheeler in the world when it was launched in 1912.

The Great Lakes Historical Society was formed in 1944 and opened the Inland Seas Maritime Museum in Vermilion, Ohio in 1953, in the former Wakefield Mansion. The grounds include a replica of the 1893 Vermilion Lighthouse.
