A major attraction at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum is the "Gothic Room" from the Great Lakes passenger steamer City of Detroit III (left), which was the largest sidewheeler in the world when it was launched in 1912.

The Great Lakes Historical Society was formed in 1944 and opened the Inland Seas Maritime Museum in Vermilion, Ohio in 1953, in the former Wakefield Mansion. The grounds include a replica of the 1893 Vermilion Lighthouse.

The Lake Superior Marine Museum Association supports the activities and programs of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer's Lake Superior Maritime Visitors Center, which is located at Canal Park next to the Duluth Ship Canal and houses exhibits on Great Lakes shipping and maritime history.

Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary was established to protect a nationally significant collection of over 100 shipwrecks, spanning over a century of Great Lakes shipping history. Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary represents many "firsts" for the National Marine Sanctuary Program: -First Great Lakes sanctuary. -First sanctuary to focus solely on a large collection of underwater cultural resources. -First sanctuary located entirely in state waters.

The Lake Superior Maritime Collections Archives (LSMCA) seeks to build a research collection of high quality by identifying, collecting, preserving, and providing access to materials that tell the story of maritime history and activities relating to communities surrounding Lake Superior and the upper Great Lakes. As an integral part of the teaching and research functions of the University of Wisconsin-Superior, the LSMCA seeks to support research in the study of aquatic biology and the environment, transportation & logistics, and the local maritime history of the Twin Ports of Duluth and Superior.
